Wacky Recruiter Email From 17 Years Ago

The last time I put my name on a job search service, I received a pretty bizarre email from a recruiter.

The position was for a senior-level web developer. Besides being willing to provide 24/7 support for the web sites, the candidate would need to demonstrate "expert" knowledge in 16 areas:

  1. Java Persistence
  2. EJB3
  3. Swing
  4. Struts
  5. Hibernate
  6. Spring
  7. XML schemas
  8. Java/J2EE
  9. Servlets
  10. JSP
  11. Perl
  12. PHP
  13. Python
  14. Tomcat
  15. Apache
  16. Operational aspects of web infrastructure, such as monitoring, securing, and change management (I guess you need this for the 24/7 support)

But it doesn't stop there. The candidate would need to demonstrate "hands on" experience in 13 additional areas:

  1. Database creation and optimization
  2. Windows
  3. Linux
  4. TomCat
  5. LDAP authentication
  6. Confluence
  7. Jive forums
  8. JIRA
  9. CVS and/or Subversion
  10. JavaScript
  11. CSS
  12. Flash
  13. Understanding of browser specific compatibility issues

Oh, but that's still not the end. The candidate also would need to possess a plethora of soft skills (too many to list) as well as "a strong online portfolio displaying user-centered design".

It's my humble opinion that anyone who claimed to have these skills was either lying or really bad at each one of them.

I believe I responded to the recruiter with a terse: "I know Distinguished Engineers who could not meet those qualifications. What are you really looking for?". As one would expect, I didn't hear back.

Below is the actual email, with incriminating names removed. You have to scan through the whole thing to get the list of "expert" and "hands-on" requirements: They aren't neatly listed in one place.

Reappraising it all these years later, the email comes across as AI generated. However, I received this email in early 2008. I guess corporate gobbledygook always sounded artificial.

Also, I wonder what was the "#1 operating system for smartphones" in early 2008. Could this be BlackBerry?
